Understanding Your Test Results

Blood glucose checks are one of the best tools to help you manage diabetes. Frequent checks and good record-keeping give you and your health care team the best picture of where you are in your diabetes care.

You should work out with your health care professional a schedule of how often you should check your blood glucose level each day.

Blood glucose levels above 250 mg/dL (13.9 mmo/L) or below 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmo/L) may indicate a potential serious medical condition. Blood glucose levels should fall between the following ranges:

  • Before meals: 70 - 120 mg/dL (3.9-6.7 mmo/L)
  • 1-2 hours after meals: below 180 mg/dL (10 mmo/L)
